The Rani of Jhansi was a fabulous figure of the Indian Munity of 1857-58. A woman of great courage and considerable powers of leadership, she died bravely on the battlefield, but was she also responsible for the brutal murder of a number of English men, women and children to whom she had promised a safe conduct?
This long-debated question is examined here by a professional soldier with long service in India and who has made a particular study of the Munity. Sir John also fully describes General Sir Hugh Rose's military campaign, conducted often under a searing sun in wild jungle country whose inhabitants were mainly unco-operative if not actively hostile. Before his capture of the fortresses at Jhansi and Gwalior, he had overcome many problems of transport, supplies, finding water for men and horses and caring for the wounded. His successful operations are outstanding in Britain's military history and Sir John Smyth's description of them, together with the reactions of the Rani, make a worthy contribution to the documentation of the time.
